Abstract

This chapter introduces a specific type of joint display table called the case comparison table. Construction of a case comparison table is a form of data analysis in mixed methods research. The chapter clarifies the five components of the case comparison table: simple tables, analysis, mixed analysis, constructing, and sorting. The case comparison table forms a subcategory of visualizations that are used in mixed methods research, commonly called joint displays. Joint display is an umbrella term for visualizations in which quantitative and qualitative data and/or results are presented together for comparative and integration purposes. Case comparison tables will change during analysis, not unlike other joint displays: They are constructed and reconstructed. This analytical and iterative process is often best supported by using simple, sortable tables. Case comparison tables can be used for many purposes. The main purpose in both real-life examples was hypothesis and theory development.
